Yoga for Movement Disorders - BookThis step-by-step guide is an 'ease-into-it' approach to yoga that begins with warm-up exercises and gradually moves into poses adapted and modified for people with Parkinson's and other movement disorders. Filled with numerous photos demonstrating each pose, this book also highlights the benefits for various symptoms and offers tips that can apply to everyday living. Part One prepares the reader for practicing yoga. Part Two presents a daily guide to yoga practice, with each chapter flowing as a yoga class, ending in relaxation. "Moving through the poses and flows of yoga helps reduce muscle rigidity and increases strength, balance and flexibility. Yoga also affects more than the body; it balances our emotions, calms our mind and creates peace in our spirit." The author is a Registered Yoga Teacher, stroke survivor, and person living with Parkinson's disease. |

When I learned of my Parkinson's diagnosis, my world became a snow globe that I couldn't turn upright. I hungered for any information I could digest on managing the disease so I could settle the whirling and find balance. I pored through yoga books but few addressed the topic. One on aging and yoga contained only a paragraph about a client of the author's who had Parkinson's. Not much else. I read and re-read my favorites, at the same time searching information from web sites and medical journals. There must be a way back to my center, I thought. One night, I awoke and squinted at the clock. 3:22 A.M. My only thought was to sink deeper into the duvet. Instead of drifting back into whatever I'd been dreaming, though, my brain outlined the format and structure of a yoga book I'd hoped would be a useful tool to others with my condition. It became Yoga for Movement Disorders. It grew into the Companion DVD to Yoga for Movement Disorders. | ||||||
